11k On a different note, my nix-Bitcoin node is working out great! I love how intense the security defaults are. I even have it routing through a tiny linode! That was a challenge all by itself but we got there.
Is the JB server Jupiter01? I enabled tor and stuff but kept getting connection errors when I tried to open a channel. I’m trying to do my part and provide some of that sweet sweet liquidity.

10k For some reason River’s KYC rejected me and wouldn’t let me try again for 30 days. I ended up just going with Swan and never tried again. I’ve never had a KYC issue with any other company, before or since, but I’d really rather be a River customer than a Swan customer right now.

10k Chris, your timing is hilarious. Despite nearly constant reminders from my wife, I put off dealing with old retirement accounts for TWO YEARS, and finally got around to it last week. I decided open 401k and Roth IRA accounts with Swan Bitcoin. I use Swan to DCA, so it was convenient, and it allowed me to put this money in Bitcoin without taking a big tax hit. I’d heard some of the drama, but didn’t think much of it until hearing this episode. I agree with your analysis though, all these little turd nuggets are adding up, and it’s starting to smell like a full-blown shitstorm. As I type this boost, I’m looking at two checks made out to a Ripple-owned crypto bank, per Swan’s instructions. I have to admit, I’m starting to have second thoughts.

2.2k The sats per USD is truly interesting, especially if you include trends. Overall, I say include the stats. Regarding retirement, I suck at traditional savings and am starting to look at bitcoin as a better way to accomplish that actual goal of long term growth

2.2k I don't see any reason why btc couldn't stay under the cost of mining a coin for quite a while. The miners with reserves would keep going, and the small ones wouldn't make it. But my prediction is that it doesn't stay below $60k for long, exactly because this idea is widespread and people will start buying again if it does

I wonder if the the tooling could also use info Fountain includes in boosts to make that easier. That would help with truncated boosts from here too since Nostr notes can be way longer than boosts natively support.

2.2k From what I’ve learned thus far, it feels to me like there are other things at play that generally line up on 4 year intervals rather than #bitcoin itself having a 4 year cycle. Primarily, I think what you’ve laid out previously about the liquidity market being the driver is key.

21k I might be biased, considering I’ve “nix-ified” nearly every device in the house, but I’ll add a big +1 to nix-bitcoin. It’s been rock solid for me. I deployed it in a NixOS container a couple years ago, and I just did another major version update on it a couple nights ago. The update went super smooth, no issues. After a quick reboot, everything was back up, including the lightning channel with your node. Nix-Bitcoin is awesome!

22k Screw it! I’m blowing the whole boost budget on TWIB this week. Another newbie corner idea: what’s the difference between the different address/wallet types? I still use some “legacy” wallet addresses but some things I’ve read seem to suggest changing that. I find it confusing. From what I can tell there’s wrapped segwit, native segwit (which may or may not be the same as bech32, idk), and taproot. I found an article about switching to taproot on stacker news. It mentions that the others are more expensive and will continue getting more expensive over time, but I’d love to know why that is and if there’s ever a reason to choose one of the other options or if taproot really is the best, etc.

I would love a holiday special episode that goes over some of the logic behind your setup. What I wanted to ask you about, that I think could go with a holiday special, has to do with cold storage. I have a new cold card mk4 that I want to move my cold storage to, but I can’t decide how I want to balance backups and security. I’d be interested to hear how your thoughts change when thinking about individuals protecting their wealth as well as small business. Preferably, I’d like something that my wife could handle if me and the hardware wallet were to suddenly vanish. If something terrible like a house fire happened, and I didn’t make it, she could not access our money, the way it’s set up right now.

4.4k Luke has always been nuts. I had a positive opinion of Mechanic and Kratter going into this, though. The concern that started all of this seems reasonable. But as things progressed they seemed to completely lose the plot. It's weird to see guys who really should know better follow a literal flat-Earther off the proverbial cliff. One only needs to read what Luke and co are posting on twitter to realize how far off the rails this whole thing has gone.

10k I managed to avoid getting any funds stolen, but I still regenerated a bunch of wallets, and not just the CC, as a result of all this. Thanks to the inspiration from LUP, I decided to build an offline NixOS ISO with sparrow, and a custom script I wrote to generate seed phrases, using /dev/urandom. It worked like a charm, and I can be quite sure no one else creates wallets like I do. 😂 Thanks for the value!

4.4k The greater fool theory kills me. Someone decides to store value by hanging on to something with good monetary properties. Over time, he does better than someone holding onto something with worse monetary properties. Other people follow suit and the good money obtains a monetary premium and goes up in value. This doesn't require anybody to be fooled about the nature of the money. It would be foolish to not adopt the better money.

22k Hey Chris! Great show! Regarding the age vs gold standard stuff, I more or less agree with you, I just see it a little differently. Instead of time since 1971, I think of it as “time spent on a fiat system”: They blow up 100% of the time, so the longer one goes, the more messed up and prone to failure it is. Going off the gold standard allowed for more creative ways to keep the charade going.
Also, consider the incentives of fiat. It basically incentivizes everyone to buy up all the resources as quickly as possible. The longer you hodl dollars, the less you get when you spend. Of course people are going to buy up and hoard all the scarce assets they can, it makes for better money than the money!

2.2k I used to play trumpet when I was in school. I still even have the old trumpet in my closet just collecting dust. Needs polishing work but every once in awhile, I'll play it. Honestly got more value out of the music theory because it helps me understand the basic principles of things a little easier.

I have had to fix it twice but ordered the parts fixed it myself. I just ordered the esp32 based wifi module to upgrade the original esp8266 which will let me run new firmware with features I'm excited about. I just started using the HACS integration as well. I don't have solar yet but openEVSE has features for charging based on solar production.

5k Great show you guys have. I love to hear about the behind the scenes work when it comes to podcasting 2.0. With regards to with auto generating voice for podcasting. This is happening with YouTube shorts and a lot of summary type videos for movies and shows so I wouldn't be surprised the same thing happens with podcasting. You're alright though, for me I do prefer the personal touch with podcasts so hopefully it won't be as big an issue as it is on video sharing sites.

If we're talking about the US Fed, though ... what do you think about the NY Fed holding 7000 tonnes of gold on behalf of foreign governments ? After invading Venezuela, the US might be able to steal its bitcoin reserves, or maybe not. The gold in NY is much easier to steal.
If I wanted a sovereign reserve, I know where I'd look!

20k We've started to do 'bowls' for family and friend gatherings. Each person brings a few things. Think of all the options at a Chipotle or similar. You can set a theme for the bowl like Mexican, Indian, Korean etc. It seems to work well for dietary restrictions as you build your own bowl. Also I think it allows people to put in as much or as little work as they want. The challenge is coordination, with small groups a group chat works but large groups you need a sign-up spreadsheet with categories.

20k Excellent episode, as usual! I think you’ve hit the nail on the head about BTC loans. I believe it’s going to be a massive market. I need one myself, actually. Last year, I had some cash set aside to buy a car and went to some dealerships, but right before I pulled the trigger, Uncle Sam hit my wife and I with a massive tax bill. It was our first full year living and working in WA, and I guess my wife wasn’t paying enough in taxes out of her paycheck. Wiped out my whole car fund. Luckily, I was listening to TWIB, and stacking sats. So, it didn’t hurt as bad as it could have, but now I need one of those BTC loans. I am highly interested in the subject either way, so thanks for covering these important topics!

Loved the Gaming episode! I'm more of a competitive fps player so Overwatch, The Finals, and Splitgate for me. Like Brent I have never played StarCraft so he's not alone. For single player games, I'm currently playing Hogwarts Legacy. Though back up your saves cause Steam Cloud can be a bit finicky with multiple devices. Nearly lost 30hrs of gameplay if it wasn't for my steamdeck being shutdown when it happened. Overall, I definitely would like to see more gaming content. Might be an excuse if you guys Livestream with peertube or owncast if that's the case. Even Zap.stream has a platform built on Nostr and Sat Streaming. Or just an episode covering selfhosted live streaming. Rehellio is my tag on Steam if anyone is curious. Can't wait to see ya over at LFNW!

Also, a while back you guys were talking about network equipment for the studio in the post show. I’m not a big fan of going Ubiquiti for everything. I think you guys might find it to be restrictive and expensive. It’s pretty cost-effective to go with pfSense or opnsense on the firewall, spin up the unifi controller software on a VM, and then you manage Unifi APs with their nice UI without buying any cloud gateway devices, saving you hundreds. I have less experience with the cameras, so someone else will have to chime in about how those could be used in a more “tinkerer-friendly” way. Wes, during that same post show conversation you brought up potentially having problems using pfSense or opnsense on your home (fiber) network. I used to live quite close to you and sent you some specific info about how to do it, including a link to a pfSense guide specific the ISP. The guide works for opnsense too. It’s nothing too crazy, you just have to set up PPPoE and deal with the management VLAN. If you spoof the MAC address of the ISP router, it’ll just work and you don’t have to let them know you changed anything.

Headphone boost! As someone who has boosted in about thoroughly enjoying highly technical content, I also very much enjoyed the gaming content. Maybe it’s the ADD, but I personally think the wide variety is a feature, and keeps the show feeling fresh. Regarding the Saturday live stream, I absolutely would listen to that, if I wasn’t already planning to attending in-person! See ya’ll at what will be my first LFNW! P.S.
