Another question: as a member who also boosts, do you prefer having income from memberful or as boosts? Say for example I wanted to increase my financial contribution to JB. Is the membership or boosts more effective/easier for you guys to take in?

As a member, I want to help offset that some, especially if it is something that I could either help support with time or by helping automate or maintaining some of the infrastructure, etc

Fidgets are a big part of my life, mostly because when you have a 3d printer, you can make your own. I've made probably around 20 infinity cubes for people and then 2 for myself, 1 for work and 1 for home. Look up fidget on printables.com or thingiverse

Wes and his map will be able to tell you, I wouldn’t have too far to travel, so I’m happy to help if there’s anything I can do. I don’t have any meshtastic nodes up and running at this moment, but I have a lot stuff left over from my experiments. Mostly Heltecs and RAK. The antennas my Heltec’s came with were trash. After improving the antenna, my distances went way up. I have 2 large antennas and have permission to permenantly affix a node on the roof of my work.

Couldn't make it yesterday since the storms in my area knocked out the regions electricity. Thankfully I have a portable generator to keep water and fridge running. Maybe it's time to invest in a battery system with an inverter and a bigger generator to keep more of the home running

I enjoy the AI subject matter and the way you cover it. I’m fairly new to the Linux and FOSS world and now I have to weave AI into it all, so I appreciate the way you bring it into the Linux ecosystem, give examples of practical use cases and also potential hooks to be aware of. AI is here to stay and everyone needs to understand how to use it, so leep the content coming, that’s my vote.

I think you guys are balancing AI and non-AI topics very well. I can definitely tell there is a lot of work put in each week to keep topics fresh and highlight the lesser hyped things. Keep it up

I really enjoyed the EBPF episode and wouldn’t mind more like it. I would LOVE to do a TUI challenge. There are so many good TUI applications written in rust these days. Another variant could be a “no mouse” challenge. The idea is: You have one week to design your perfect keyboard-driven tiling desktop/WM setup, and then the following week you have to use it on your main PC. Points are awarded based on keeb-friendliness and use of terminal/TUI apps. If you have to break down and use a mouse, say 3 times over the course of the week, the punishment is you have you adjust your .bashrc (or equivalent) to pipe all terminal output through lolcat for a month. 😈

I almost tried Nebula, but I actually just converted all my stuff from WireGuard to self-hosted Netbird. If you guys had consulted with me first, I’d have probably chosen nebula, but at least it will be interesting to compare the two. =P With WireGuard, I kept ending up in situations where DNS alone couldn’t quite do everything I needed. Netbird redirects DNS queries to itself, which allows it to respond for your private network, or forward them to the local DNS provider, and that means I can refer to my stuff by name AND it doesn’t break the software on my work PC. What a time to be alive! I really like it so far! Much better than handling as many WireGuard keys as I was. Does nebula do something similar to netbird with DNS?

I have had really good luck with N100 boards. I have 2 that run 24/7. One is my firewall and the other is my NAS. Chris and Wes, you have both recently mentioned you’re thinking about new network gear. I’ve been running opnsense on a barebones, fanless n100 firewall with 4 2.5G NICs from Aliexpress for years, and I don’t really have any reason to complain. It’s been super stable and reliable for me. Wes, I have successfully used one to spoof the MAC address of and replace CenturyLink’s router without having to tell them, when I lived in Seattle. You just need to configure the WAN port to handle the management VLAN (201) and PPPoE. I built the NAS myself with an N100 board I found on sale. It came with 6 SATA ports and I added more with a PCI adapter. I also really like that I can dedicate a full 2.5G NIC to each of my VLANs. It’s in a Jonsbo NAS case with front loading disks running NixOS (btw). All in all, I really like these little n100 boards on projects that I want to treat like an appliance.

Imho we have let the crypto skeptics get inside our heads. I think as a community we should lean into the fact that boost are powered by bitcoin. As a small business, I’m grateful to have support in a hard asset. It’s helped me fight inflation and keep my head above water. Bitcoin is an intelligence test, and I don’t need everyone in the world listening. I want a great audience, not the biggest audience possible. These are things we should lean into as a podcasting community trying to offer an alternative to mainstream crap. Go Podcasting!

Regarding multikernels Maybe you have a specifically optimized for gaming kernel run on a few cores so that all the gaming tasks have better performance. Wait, if there's a different kernel running on each core does that mean that things like kernel anticheat won't be able to see other tasks running elsewhere? So do you negate the privacy implications of kernel level anti cheats that way? Hmmmm

If family computer counts, the first computer I remember using and learning was a dell dimension 5000. Keep in mind I'm only only 10ish years older than your oldest... Sorry to make you feel old lol The first computer that was actually mine was a custom built machine centered around an A10-7890K because I was too poor for a dedicated video card at the time. This was during high school so what money I did get from the job I had was saved up and I later bought a 1050ti.

For the dumb time machine thought experiment I would back to the era of early steam locomotives so 1880s to early 1920s. I would love to be on a train crew and armed with my current knowledge of how to run one already, I probably wouldn't need to learn too much in terms of being an engineer or even a fireman. Also, a while back you guys were talking about network equipment for the studio in the post show. I’m not a big fan of going Ubiquiti for everything. I think you guys might find it to be restrictive and expensive. It’s pretty cost-effective to go with pfSense or opnsense on the firewall, spin up the unifi controller software on a VM, and then you manage Unifi APs with their nice UI without buying any cloud gateway devices, saving you hundreds. I have less experience with the cameras, so someone else will have to chime in about how those could be used in a more “tinkerer-friendly” way. Wes, during that same post show conversation you brought up potentially having problems using pfSense or opnsense on your home (fiber) network. I used to live quite close to you and sent you some specific info about how to do it, including a link to a pfSense guide specific the ISP. The guide works for opnsense too. It’s nothing too crazy, you just have to set up PPPoE and deal with the management VLAN. If you spoof the MAC address of the ISP router, it’ll just work and you don’t have to let them know you changed anything.

Congratulations Alex for figuring out why in the business datacenter we have a few separate SANs, compute hosts and NAS boxes instead of one. All because the department of redundancy department exists. In my homelab, I have found that added complexity can make more headaches down the road when one box gets updated and that breaks a thing or you have to shut everything down because your NAS with all the data needs an update or whatever the case may be

re: fusion power I'm not an expert, just someone who has been interested in nuclear physics and done some research, so if there's anyone out there in the audience who knows more, please correct me We're actually getting there. ITER is planned to be operational as the first power grid scale fusion power plant in France by 2037, japan has had a working fusion generating station since 2023 called JT-60. So for Helion to be making a much smaller scale fusion generator compared those those projects, I believe it. Smaller and more efficient stations might be the way to go for the future. Would make the power grid more resilient since if there are many smaller systems adding power to the grid, the chance of a chain blackout is less. Also fusion has minimal waste compared to fission. The fuel is deuterium which is Hydrogen with 1 proton and 1 neutron smashed into Tritium which is Hydrogen with 1 proton and 2 neutrons. The most waste producing part is creating the tritium since that involves lithium mining

I’ve been using Hyprland on NixOS for years at this point, and imo, it’s a match made in heaven. Hyprland has really come a long way since the early days and has had first-class NixOS support the whole time I’ve been using it. It’s really cool to see more people appreciating all the work being done over there, they really deserve the attention. I feel like it made my computers fun and exciting again.

I’m not a total Linux newbie, have been running a couple of Ubuntu servers and Linux Mint on a laptop for over a year now, but want to set up a Linux desktop as a daily driver now. I’m looking at Pop OS for now, any suggestions appreciated. Thanks from New Zealand!
