I wrote a little rust program to roll a virtual dice using the rand crate, then used that running on my desktop which at that time had been online and doing a bunch of things in the background for a while to get some random dice rolls. Yes, in a positive way. I am self employed and take care of clients’ website and e-commerce infrastructure.
AI allows me to do way more than before. An example is testing, I use AI to write scripts to automate testing, saves me hours each time.
AI helps me troubleshoot issues on tools I have very little experience with.
And this is just the beginning, I haven’t even gone deep into the Agent world yet.
AI is going to disrupt and create opportunities at the same time. It’s up to all of us to make sure we’re in the right place to benefit.

16k I am an IT sysadmin that also enjoys coding. LLMs have changed by job a little bit in that I don't have to spend as much time sorting through search results to find solutions to my problems. I'm able to find things sooner and have answers that are more catered to the problem that I am having. For coding, I enjoy doing it and I don't have a pressure to release anything faster than normal so agentic coding hasn't really been a huge part of it yet. If there was a pressure to ship mostly functional programs sooner, I might be using it more but at the moment it is just a fabulous search tool

It’s a little bit technical as you do it all yourself, from sourcing the hardware to installing Linux and running it through the command line.
Includes Bitcoin Core and an Elecctrum server to connect to your wallet.
I’ve done this on two servers now, it’s a lot of fun if you like this kind of thing and you’re a sovereign actor on the Bitcoin network.

4.6k Five years ago Michael Saylor created a 20 part podcast series with Robert Breedlove, he talked about history and first principles. I listened to it twice and it helped me deepen my understanding of Bitcoin and build conviction. I shared it with friends.
Now when I listen to him talk I don’t even understand what the words mean. I do not share any of his talks with Bitcoin newbies any more. He’s a different guy focusing on different things.
Good luck to him, I’m just glad I came across the old Saylor when I did.

4.1k In regards to entropy and offline generation, I think people are missing the point. You want more entropy data points and to get such things, most operating systems get that from network, disk, memory, all kinds of different things that are changing. If you have a tails system that's completely air-gapped, you're not going to have all the network data points that you can pull from to add to the entropy pool. To get the most randomness, you want a very high entropy pool and the Linux entropy pool is taking all sorts of different inputs, so the more inputs you can add, the higher your entropy, the better your random number generator is. So when I generated more dice rolls, I was using my main online system with browser open as much entropy as you can possibly get based off of network activity, and all that. Yes, sure, if somebody pwned that computer already, they could see the numbers that were generated, but that still is much higher entropy than if you have an offline system that you just booted up and you're already generating numbers off of.

It sounds like one of those Omnibus bill tricks, where the act is about something else (eg. Stablecoins) but it includes some nasty surprises in other areas in the small print. (Eg. Removing protections for FOSS developers).

The ones on the Mars rovers are less than 30sqin in size, weigh 100lbs and are capable of outputting 100W for 14 years. Your EV will cost 84mil US greenbacks though so there's that. But you'd have an unlimited range!

If we're talking about the US Fed, though ... what do you think about the NY Fed holding 7000 tonnes of gold on behalf of foreign governments ? After invading Venezuela, the US might be able to steal its bitcoin reserves, or maybe not. The gold in NY is much easier to steal.
If I wanted a sovereign reserve, I know where I'd look!

16k For those asking: Mining pool update
I have a proof of concept set up. However it is based on the project called P2PoolV2. The payout system doesn't work yet so there's no point for me to share the link and for us to burn energy without a reward. The pool by default uses PPLNS shares but there are other payout methods being implemented. I will update again when there is a minimum viable product of P2PoolV2 available

33k Catching up, regarding the poverty line, I spend over 23k on housing and I'm in the Midwest in a rural area. What gets me is that all these "experts" never update their formulas even though everything is constantly changing around them. Why do you think that is?

I’ve been holding off upgrading and am still running v28 but as v31 is coming out soon I think I need to upgrade to keep within the maintenance window.
What configuration changes have you made to the defaults and what do you suggest for version updates and basic config changes?

It’s built by a Bitcoiner, you get discount when you pay in Sats and if you pay over LN, there’s zero KYC and the built in privacy of Lightning.
Use it with a VPN (like Mullvad, also paid for in Sats) and offers pretty good privacy for general use.
You can connect via a browser or with API keys. I use it for general topics or learning, not for anything private is sensitive.
You can connect to all the latest models and it’s really good value as you pay per query (PPQ).
There are more and more online services like this that accept sats and if we’re going to get the world using Bitcoin as money, these are great places to support the global P2P Bitcoin economy.

2.2k I don't see any reason why btc couldn't stay under the cost of mining a coin for quite a while. The miners with reserves would keep going, and the small ones wouldn't make it. But my prediction is that it doesn't stay below $60k for long, exactly because this idea is widespread and people will start buying again if it does

Both in terms of the amount of coverage, but also in being neither cheerleaders nor thought-free haters. I'm pretty much aligned with Brent, and like he clearly is, I'm enjoying hearing Chris and Wes's AI adventures

I enjoy the AI subject matter and the way you cover it. I’m fairly new to the Linux and FOSS world and now I have to weave AI into it all, so I appreciate the way you bring it into the Linux ecosystem, give examples of practical use cases and also potential hooks to be aware of. AI is here to stay and everyone needs to understand how to use it, so leep the content coming, that’s my vote.

Also, wanted to throw out there I've loved the members bootleg feed update having the video enclosure! Life has been crazy busy so being able to see the amazing studio, your facial reactions, & friendly faces has been awesome when I get some downtime 😁 FYI, since you'd chatted with Fountian a lot in the past, when rotating to landscape mode using the video version in full screen the Fountain logo cuts off part of Chris' head when you go to the 3 person shot (since Chris is on top). Not a big deal but just figured I'd mention it & hopefully Fountain will just drop their logo to give you screen real-estate back. (Using a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in case screen dimensions matter)

While I can appreciate other listeners sentiments (and initially for a little I agreed) that there was too much AI convo. But I reflected on it a while back & I have really appreciated the pragmatic and fun approachs JB has taken with AI. For a while you'd used it in the background & not brought it up much because (I'm assuming) it wasn't as applicable for the wider audience (i.e. song generation), but as you've found things had greater impact you've brought more intentional topics to us. All while breaking down the "magic" for exactly how you're running things & a reality check on where things are. I also, through the bootleg member feeds & other community focused shows, recognize how much work goes into making high quality shows like Linux Unplugged & all the other JB shows (co-hosts, content research & distillation, plus making profitable so JB can exist as a company & Chris can actually afford healthcare, etc.). So while Chris didn't really comment on the mention of "make a new show" (I'm sure he's heard it before & he's too polite), that is a non-trivial effort that is very difficult when JB's main show only has 1 sponsor. Not trying to be mean, just trying to make sure other listeners know as well. All that to say, I personally want to thank you for your intentionally & would love to keep hearing more as you keep seeing these shift changes in AI. Plus all the fun practical projects you work on (opencode + physically debugging heater was wild!). Keep up the awesome work 🎉, & if it gets to be too much hype (IMO) I'll pipe up 😁 (FYI, I think this is my first boost on Fountain with my nostr key setup, so IDK what my name will come through but feel free to just say elrey or elrey741 or however you feel like pronouncing it Chris 😉)
