Been a minute so here’s a little extra. Also, I really like the talk about stack monitoring. One thing that took me forever to realize is that Prometheus actually has a way to dynamically add nodes to the scrape config. So instead of manually adding every host in the main config, you point to a wildcard pattern and then create a simple json file per host. Best part: no need to restart Prometheus when adding a host. An Ansible playbook’s dream.

2.2k Welcome back for the new year! Whilst I prefer the shows not focused on US-internal politics, I know there'll be some of that, it's only natural for a US based show.
If we're talking about the US Fed, though ... what do you think about the NY Fed holding 7000 tonnes of gold on behalf of foreign governments ? After invading Venezuela, the US might be able to steal its bitcoin reserves, or maybe not. The gold in NY is much easier to steal.
If I wanted a sovereign reserve, I know where I'd look!

4k I have ADHD and use podcasts and audiobooks to help me focus at work, video just distracts me and so I never use it. That being said if others would like video I'd have no issue with it so long as you remain an audio first show. I've given up on a few long time listens due to the hosts moving to a video first mindset and making the audio a waste of time to listen to, I'd hate to see that happen to TWIB.
tl;dr: Video is a fine addition, as long as you keep an audio first mindset.

22k Hot take on hobbies: watching TV and reading a book is NOT a hobby. That is “entertainment”. A hobby needs some kind of effort on your part that potentially builds a skill. BUT, reading the most books or becoming an expert in a TV show ARE hobbies IMO.

4k First, enjoy the vacation, it's well deserved. Second on Ace's thought on the Amazon coin, I agree with his assessment but I think the real play will be the interest. They will treat the Amazon coin like a gift card where you deposit money with the company and redeem it later, and in that in-between time the company is accruing interest. Starbucks is rivaling some banks with their gift card interest bearing holdings and I'm sure Amazon is not far behind them.

4k While I do believe that the establishment Democrats are anti-bitcoin, I don't think the El Salvador investigation is just about the use of Bitcoin. While I'm sure the use of Bitcoin is a factor it may just be a convenient way to mask their true intention of driving a wedge between El Salvador and the current administration over the migrant detention center. Then again this is the Dems we're talking about so they may just have their "Bitcoin bad" blinders on and are just taking any opportunity to attack Bitcoin.

4k Dave, as a former business owner one hard lesson I had to learn was, trying to please everyone is a path to ruin. Sometimes you just have to be thick skinned, take ownership of a decision and tell the people who don't like it that they can either accept it or leave. They'll get mad, they'll threaten to leave, and 9 times out of 10 they'll quietly come back, and if they don't come back, then they weren't right for the vision of the project.

4k My cold storage is a paper wallet stored in an Altoids style tin that is locked in a fire proof wall safe. I print my paper wallets on a laptop that I ran DBAN on them installed Mint 19.1 on and never connected to the network. The laptop is permanently air gapped and the only connection it has is a USB connection to an old dumb laser printer. I run Bitcoin paper wallet locally to generate new wallets as needed. It may not be "military grade encryption" but it works for me and my humble little stack.

Thanks for the wake up call! I deployed Prometheus and Grafana and now I'm hooking up everything 😅 My TrueNAS, Proxmox, Unifi (there's a nice video by TechnoTim in yt), and Home Assistant. I have no idea what to make with all those data, the next step is to set up alerts I guess. Great episode as always.
