I shared this quite a while back, but now that you're on the Nix/Hyprland train (and my config has improved as well), here's my NixOS & HomeManager flake on gitub. It's a multi-host flake with reasonably sane, opinionated configs for Hyprland, Niri, Sway, River & Wayfire - also enables Plasma6 and COSMIC desktops. https://github.com/WhatstheUse/Fortydeux-NixOS-System-Flake Hyprland has been my go-to for a long time, but I'm really digging Niri with the "niri-switcher" addon lately. I'd gone to using the hyprscroller plugin for Hyprland, and in Niri that type of scrolling (based on PaperWM for Gnome) is built in Beautifully! It's also written in Rust 🦀 - and you can bring along your same Waybar config, just use "niri/workspaces" etc instead of the hyprland equivalents. It's definitely a project to watch (and try out!).

Chris, it's great to see you on the Nix/Hyprland train - I'll be checking out your config for sure! I've been going this route for a while and loving it, and it sounds like youve gone a similar route to me with the multi-host flake approach. Someone mentioned the repeated rebuilds - this takes a little less time with home-manager, and there are a couple ways to approach this, my tip would be, keep it as a standard Hyprland config file outside of Nix/HM while making heavy changes - this way you benefit from hot reload when saving the config file. Once it's more stable, start writing it to your .config folder with home-manager's "home.file". Then convert to a ".nix" eventually when it's pretty solid.

I too have been feeling the pain of no boosting or sat streaming from the private bootleg feed. One idea would be a 'credit' or 'podpass' system for Fountain that allows the podcast creator to give credits/passes to their Subscription feeds. I.E. you don't have to ditch the private RSS feeds for now, but also add the bootlegs to a Fountain Subscription feed, and ask the Fountain team to give these credits/passes to a JSON list of Jupiter Party members - obviously this requires Fountain to implement this credit/pass feature, and you would have to build a way to let Party members enter their Fountain IDs. But it might be a potential way forward?!

have a great time at Linux Fest. Do you have any suggestions or old episodes to help new Linux users decide on distros as a daily driver? I’m not a total Linux newbie, have been running a couple of Ubuntu servers and Linux Mint on a laptop for over a year now, but want to set up a Linux desktop as a daily driver now. Boost for the road! I’d like to hear your opinion on Open Source LLMs. If an LLM is Open Source, how much can we know about the security and telemetry of that model? If the source code is visible and we can audit it, can we be reassured of what’s being logged or used for training, or is it still a black box? I’m having a debate with a friend at the moment, he says that LLMs are black boxes, even if they are Open Source. What say you?

I’ve finally set up a Linux desktop and am slowly in the process of making it my daily driver. I’m running Mint and hve installed Librewolf browser but can you recommend any other high value services or apps for daily use? Like notes, email, backups and file storage as a starter. Thanks.

How does Nebula compare to Tailscale for the purpose of isolating a server running OpenClaw (or Hermes) in a network? Ive built a plan to isolate a small server inside my LAN so that I can experiment with agents, one item on the plan was creating a Tailnet with only the devices I want the agent to connect to. Can I do that with Nebula? How would that differ from using Tailscale? Thanks!

I enjoy the AI subject matter and the way you cover it. I’m fairly new to the Linux and FOSS world and now I have to weave AI into it all, so I appreciate the way you bring it into the Linux ecosystem, give examples of practical use cases and also potential hooks to be aware of. AI is here to stay and everyone needs to understand how to use it, so leep the content coming, that’s my vote.

Great interview Cody, this really got me thinking. It seems like many of us are no longer questioning narratives or thinking adversarially and we’re weaker for it. I no longer think Bitcoin is a done deal and all we have to do is sit on our stacks and post toxic memes to anyone who disagrees with us. I think there’s a lot of work to do and we’re a lot further from our goals than most Bitcoiners realize. Really enjoyed Roger’s takes and your questions. Thanks.

Loved this episode. Hearing Mehdi’s personal story over decades and his insights into how things were in Iran before the revolution was fascinating. Great rip Cody, I’m sure you enjoyed this one. Made me realize how early we are and how much work (and mindset shift) is still required. I liked the analogy of how do we make this change without causing an allergic reaction from the state.

Sounds like you guys found some of my faves: I dont know how I ever lived without Helix, Yazi, and Zellij - I definitely appreciate these for their no-hassle power right out of the box. Ranger and 'nnn' are my runner-ups for file mgmt. Micro is another great text editor with more standard keybindings. I'm checking out 'jellyfin-tui' right now and it looks like a new staple and reminds me of 'Moc', which is my goto simple TUI music player. Thanks for the value!

OpenClaw Question: What are the pros and cons of self hosting OpenClaw on a server in a home LAN? After looking at my options, I thought I’d try hosting the agent on a Pi at home. But a friend pointed out malware and security vulnerabilities and suggested a VPS. What would you suggest? (And can you recommend a good VPS service suitable for this task)
