250k My take on the death of binge tv: I don’t think it’s because people are not watching, but rather people just don’t know that there are things to watch. Companies are cutting back on spending and the first to go is marketing. I didn’t know about Rick and Morty or Silo. Also, it could be the game of thrones effect.

4.7k Speaking of robo vacs- we run 5 of them at the office that we control with home assistant.
Sadly one of them has a death wish.
Upstairs there is a mezzanine and the space between the railing and floor is barely small enough to block them in the event they accidentally miscalculate their position and go off-map.
That didn't stop this guy tho- it managed to wedge it's way under the railing and fall. Luckily it chose the one spot that didn't have a 15 foot drop. Made for a fun picture in the morning.

22k Hot take on hobbies: watching TV and reading a book is NOT a hobby. That is “entertainment”. A hobby needs some kind of effort on your part that potentially builds a skill. BUT, reading the most books or becoming an expert in a TV show ARE hobbies IMO.

(Aside from the nuances not common to household living) I imagine it’s nothing but great. People turn into nomads after retirement for a reason…

Caffeine is really interesting though, doesn't seem to affect me at all, even right before sleep.
Tried a 3 month caffeine break, didn't make a difference either.

I use an ultrawide 34" 1440p QD-OLED and a 27" 1440p on the side, both for gaming and work.
Fair warning though, once you go OLED / good HDR you can't go back, even had to switch my TV as well😅

In EP61 you talked about the iPhone fold.
I wouldn't switch to apple, but been using a pixel fold for two generations.
Great experience, especially for multitasking (scrolling reddit while watching YouTube 😜).
But it's a company phone and I wouldn't buy it myself for the price, the inner screen is just way to flimsy. My first generation Pixel had screen issues three times, luckily warranty each time.

But we still have an in person LAN weekend with ~20 people every January, going for 20+years.

4.7k Sadly most of my hobbies have fallen victim to hustle culture and have been integrated into current business operations or attempted to form new ones. And then of course once you start doing it for work it doesn't feel like much of a hobby anymore.
I like what you said, Chris, about keeping Star Trek to yourself and not doing a show for it. I've gotta do that for my remaining hobbies!
Luckily one that hustle doesn't really care for that I still have is yard sale-ing old tech. I always tell myself I'll do something with it, but then it just ends up sitting. 😆 Not great for my wallet, but it's still fun. And now I have all but one of the original steam machines sitting on my pile of laptops waiting to be put into my homelab and/or become emulation boxes! 😁

3.3k I shared my New Year’s resolution in LUP: The year of NixOS. However, I wanted to share my wife’s because it’s interesting. The 10 x 10 challenge. Play 10 board games 10 times. Sounds hard, but she did it last year with a full time hospital job and everything. She is obsessed with board games. Makes for easy Christmas/Birthday shopping.

Question for you guys (and anyone in the community that wants to boost in)- do you have any preferred methods of dealing with burnout? I used to get rejuvenated by doing something weird with my homelab, joining in on a JB challenge, going for a hike, or letting my adhd pick a random new hobby for me. But nowadays everything seems to just make it worse. Would love to hear strategies you guys use! (Especially Chris since he's a fellow adhd-er and it seems like we have a lot of similar stressors, at least based on what he has shared on air)

ls | wc - l 8 I treat my downloads folder like /tmp. It even gets cleared on reboot. If there was something on there that I needed and got deleted... Then I didn't need it that much.

I'm in a similar boat to PJ- as a general rule, I don't fully integrate anything into my core/day to day production until I can own it and run it on my own hardware. (Or vps I control) Probably have been listening to Chris's defined networking ad reads for too long. 😆 But, that being said, one thing that is handy is that the openai api spec is quickly turning into S3 of the AI world. So in the interim, even with the cloud models, I can run them through a proxy that exposes them to my systems as a generic openai compatible model, and to my systems it doesn't matter where the model resides, and once I get a local model that performs well enough I can just swap it out and start integrating it more centrally into my production environment. Doesn't mean I won't play with it and learn it until then to be something I CAN rely on for production use. It just won't be something I WILL rely on until that point. (all caps just for emphasis since fountain doesn't support italics. Not yelling or anything)
