342. Hardware Wallets: Security or Liability

I’m heartbroken too and have survivor guilt. I’ve been in this space for just under two years and by a stroke of luck, I chose a different hardware brand. It could have been me and as thankful as I am that it wasn’t, I almost wish it was. FUCK THEIVES!!! I’m still bullish as hell and am going to beef up my security. The pain in you and Marty’s demeanor was felt so powerfully, not just through the sense of hearing, but the 6th sense of empathy. Don’t beat yourselves up… y’all are amazing and inspirational. Love you and everything you’ve done for this revolution. We’re still gonna win 👊🧡

I have to admit that I often forget to zap because I listen to podcast during my hour and a half long commute and then I forget by the time I get to a stopping point. Although much of this is over my head I’m trying to learn as much as I can and this one definitely inspired me to really take action on starting up a meet up in my area. Thanks!

Yesterday I had a hack attempt Where someone called saying they were with one of my bitcoin wallets and that there was some suspicious activity they needed to clarify. Over the weekend That same Wallet sent a notification asking if I was trying to change my phone number or something and I said no. So, it seemed kind of legit… they were very educated and they talked for a while and told me where the login attempt was, in another country, and that they were using a different email address which was actually a former employer address of mine. They gave me a ticket number and asked me to type it in with the Wallet domain name afterwards and it took me to a site that looked like that wallet’s site. It asked me about 3 yes / no questions about the login attempt and then it asked me for a 12 words seed phrase to detach my wallet just in case something happens… I kind of already figured something was up but that was when I ended the call and then they called back telling me that if I don’t unhook that wallet they would not be liable for any loss. So I hung up again and of course sent an email to the helpdesk for that Wallet and verified that it was in fact a hack attempt. They are getting better and better, so be wary! Great rip! I listened to this little late since I was traveling and I’m trying to catch up. Not just on podcasts, but all the technology you’re talking about here and on RHR, etc. I am only about 15 months into this whole Bitcoin/freedom tech rabbit hole and it is a bit overwhelming for an GenXr who’s busy learning how to get out of the fiat world while working a full time fiat job. In regard to the friction you feel when checking out and not wanting to have a conversation with the barista, I got you… I’m trying to orange pill everyone I can so I actually ask every single cashier if they take bitcoin just to plant the seed and every now and then a conversation is spawned.

This came at the perfect time since I’ll be in Buenous Aires next week for a few days! I look forward to visiting there for my first time and to see how the blue (land orange) markets work.

Great interview! I heard another one with Keonne the other day and I’m glad that you asked a bunch of different questions that helps understand some of the nuances. In my mind, this case against him ridiculous and unjust. I’m gonna sign the petition and forward it to other others. Your book came in the mail the other day but I had to finish Alex Gladstein‘s “Check your financial privilege” first. (That was an amazing book!) I’m a couple chapters into yours and I’m enjoying it while learning even more about bitcoin. My father was Polish and left in 1940 on foot so it’s interesting to hear your family’s story That took place decades later. Thanks for everything you’re doing! I’m so hopeful for the future 😌
